Sedation Dentistry
Sedation Dentistry
At Oklahoma Family Dentistry, we will always do whatever we can to ensure that all our patients are comfortable and relaxed while in our care. We understand that dental anxiety is a real, common issue for patients, and we take this phenomenon very seriously. We never want to put you in a position where your anxiety over an upcoming procedure is so severe that you no longer feel like you can attend, stripping you of the dental care you need and deserve.
As an answer to these concerns, we are proud to offer several safe, relaxing sedation options!
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous Oxide, sometimes referred to as “laughing gas,” is the tried-and-true standard form of conscious dental sedation. This colorless gas helps you feel incredibly calm and relaxed while still conscious and aware of those around you. We will always ask for your consent before using it, and may ask you questions or give you verbal directions during the procedure.
General Anesthesia Sedation
Some longer, more invasive procedures or individuals with severe dental anxiety may require general anesthesia. When placed under anesthesia, you will be deeply unconscious for the entirety of the procedure, with no feeling or awareness of your surroundings until you regain consciousness.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Some procedures or individuals with dental anxiety may require a slightly stronger sedation method. After taking your prescribed medication about an hour before your procedure, you will fall into an incredibly relaxed and drowsy state, almost as if you are lying down for a light nap. You will still be slightly aware of your surroundings and those around you, but will have little to no memory of the procedure once it is completed. This sedation lasts a bit longer than nitrous oxide, so you will need a trusted friend or family member to drive you home after.
